Minimum wage: Tinubu, Govs to discuss at NEC meeting Thursday

By Fly Cable News

President Bola Tinubu is set to address the issue of the new national minimum wage in a crucial meeting with state governors at the 142nd session of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, scheduled for Thursday.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, made this announcement during a visit to Kano, where he conveyed President Tinubu’s condolences to Vice President Kashim Shettima on the passing of his mother-in-law.

Expressing the President’s regret at not being able to attend in person, Gbajabiamila emphasized the significance of Tinubu’s attendance at the NEC meeting, which he rarely joins. This meeting follows the recent decision by the Federal Executive Council to defer action on the Tripartite Committee’s report on the new minimum wage, pending further consultations with stakeholders.

Speaking on the matter, Gbajabiamila stated, “President Tinubu will be attending tomorrow’s NEC meeting, which underscores the importance of his presence in Abuja at this time.”

The issue of the national minimum wage has been a subject of extensive deliberations between the Federal Government, organized private sector, and labor unions, with varying proposals on the table. While the labor unions advocate for N250,000, the Federal Government and states have proposed N62,000 and N60,000, respectively.

The NEC, chaired by the Vice President and comprising state governors and other key officials, plays a pivotal role in advising the President on economic matters and coordinating economic planning efforts across all levels of government.

President Tinubu’s participation in this meeting signifies a crucial step towards resolving the impasse over the new minimum wage, ensuring equitable consideration for all stakeholders involved.
