The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take decisive actions to prevent the planned nationwide protest from escalating within the state.

This urgent plea was presented during a plenary session on Thursday through a ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ brought forward by Majority Leader Noheem Adams.

The lawmakers emphasized the importance of this intervention by recalling the devastation caused by the EndSARS protest of 2020, which resulted in significant loss of life and property damage in Lagos.

To avoid a repeat of such events, the Assembly stressed the need for proactive engagement with key stakeholders to address the concerns of the youth and those supporting the proposed protest.

The motion proposed two key meetings: the first between Governor Sanwo-Olu and elected political leaders, including senators, members of the House of Representatives, and state lawmakers.

The second meeting would involve traditional rulers, religious leaders, market heads, leaders in the transport sector, and other relevant stakeholders. These discussions aim to find ways to calm tensions and provide a platform for dialogue.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, emphasized the necessity for state governments to act swiftly to calm frayed nerves and ensure the protection of lives and property.

He noted that Lagos is still grappling with the aftermath of the EndSARS protest and appealed for patience with the government of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, which he said is working towards a better Nigeria.

Dr. Obasa drew comparisons to the ongoing crises in Kenya, Sudan, and Syria, emphasizing the need to prevent similar unrest in Nigeria.

He commended the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, for his proactive engagement with community heads regarding the planned protest and called for an urgent meeting with all leaders, including those from religious and traditional organizations, to dissuade the youth from participating.

During the session, Hon. Adams (Eti-Osa 1) urged citizens to reconsider their plans for the protest, highlighting President Tinubu’s efforts to address their concerns, such as raising the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.

Hon. Kehinde Joseph expressed concern over the lack of identifiable leaders among the protesters, which complicates efforts for dialogue and negotiation. He called for patience, stressing the collective impact of national issues.

Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh supported this view, noting that President Tinubu understands Nigeria’s challenges and is taking steps to prevent the country’s collapse.

He also urged Nigerians to focus on the role of state governors, as federal allocations to states have increased under the current administration.

Other lawmakers echoed these sentiments, urging parents to discourage their children from joining the protest or being used to commit crimes. The Assembly’s unified stance highlights the critical need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further unrest in Lagos and Nigeria at large.

The planned nationwide protest has emerged in response to a range of socio-economic issues affecting Nigerians, including the recent removal of fuel subsidies, rising cost of living, and perceived government inaction on critical reforms.

The protest is expected to draw large crowds of dissatisfied citizens, primarily youths, who are calling for immediate government intervention to alleviate their hardships.

The memory of the EndSARS protests of 2020 looms large, with many fearing a repeat of the violence and destruction that occurred during that time.

The EndSARS movement, which began as a call to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), quickly evolved into a broader protest against police brutality and systemic injustice. The resulting clashes led to significant casualties and widespread property damage, particularly in Lagos.

Given the potential for similar unrest, the Lagos State House of Assembly’s call for preventive measures is seen as a critical step in averting another crisis.
