2024 Olympics kicks off in Paris without a hitch

Despite a rainy forecast, the Paris 2024 opening ceremony went off without a hitch.

The most ambitious opening ceremony ever appeared to have gone smoothly Friday, without any notable mishaps or scheduling errors — except, for the unfortunate rain.

Athletes arrived via boat and cruised down the Seine for the Parade of Nations.

The ceremony highlighted historic Paris landmarks, including the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the Louvre.

Paris is hosting the Olympics for the third.

The Olympic torch was passed from soccer great Zinedine Zidane to tennis star Rafael Nadal.

Nadal brought the flame back to the Seine and boarded a boat with Serena Williams, Carl Lewis and Nadia Comăneci.

After being carried by a number of athletes, the Olympic cauldron was officially lit.

For the first time, the Olympic Games will have an equal 50-50 ratio between male and female athletes, IOC President Thomas Bach said.

Céline Dion closed out the night by singing “L’Hymne à l’amour” from the base of the Eiffel Tower, marking her first performance first time since she announced her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome in 2022.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has sent his best wishes to Team Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

A total of 88 Team Nigeria athletes, including 63 women and 25 men, are flying Nigeria’s flag in 12 sports at the Paris Olympics.

The President assured the country’s ambassadors at the games of his full support and that of over 200 million Nigerians back home, cheering for their success.
