Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has endorsed a traditional approach to price control initiated by local traditional rulers to curb rising food inflation.
In a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke praised the efforts of these traditional rulers, describing their actions as a local innovation aimed at reducing food prices and curbing the negative impact of middlemen in the marketplaces.
Expressing his satisfaction, Governor Adeleke highlighted the leadership of His Royal Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, who has spearheaded the abolition of exploitative market associations that contribute to high food prices.
“The actions of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers in controlling prices have significantly supported the government’s efforts to tackle food insecurity,” Adeleke said.
He commended traditional rulers from Ile Ife, Ede, Igbajo, Iwo, and other areas for their proactive measures and urged other royal fathers in the state to follow suit.
“I urge our royal fathers to engage with market associations to prevent the exploitation of our people. I commend the Ooni of Ife, the Oluwo of Iwoland, and the Timi of Ede Land for their initiatives. This approach should be adopted by all royal fathers,” Adeleke stated.
Governor Adeleke also directed his Special Adviser on Markets to collaborate with traditional rulers to support this new drive for traditional price control, ensuring the integration of Iyalojas and Babalojas into the implementation process.
Meanwhile, the Governor has instructed the Food Security Implementation Committee to expedite its efforts to establish a secure and accessible food supply chain in Osun State.
He urged the committee to develop actionable plans with clear deliverables and timelines, emphasizing the urgency of addressing food security.
“The committee comprises experienced experts, and it is time for action. We have a comprehensive food security report and need a roadmap for execution. I commend the Commissioner for Agriculture for his efforts on our agro-industrialisation agenda. We have initiated the supply of tractors, which I will unveil soon, and embraced traditional price control through our traditional rulers,” Adeleke noted.
Governor Adeleke reiterated the importance of implementing a holistic agenda that addresses all segments of the agricultural value chain as outlined in the Food Security Committee report.
“Our focus is on the actualisation of this comprehensive plan to ensure food security and stability in Osun State,” he declared.
