Speaker Obasa commends peaceful protests in Lagos amid nationwide unrest

By Fly Cable News

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly has lauded the peace maintained in Lagos amid a wave of nationwide protests, describing it as commendable.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, Speaker Obasa praised the residents of Lagos, the South-West region, and other major parts of Nigeria for their adherence to peaceful conduct. He specifically commended the citizens for heeding the voice of reason and wisdom.

“The conduct of Lagosians since the nationwide protest began on Thursday is worthy of emulation. While many residents heeded the voice of reason and stayed away, those who decided to publicly express their grievances did so within the confines of the law,” Obasa stated.

He observed that the protesters carried out their actions lawfully, allowing residents to continue their daily activities in peace. The Speaker assured that the grievances expressed by the protesters have been noted and that both state and federal governments are actively working to address them.

President Bola Tinubu is championing policies that ultimately have the potential to elevate Nigeria to the level we all anticipate. In the meantime, he has taken steps to mitigate the challenge of food shortages, which is the primary cause of the protests,” Obasa added.

He further highlighted the efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, supported by the Lagos State House of Assembly, in providing roadmaps for sustained development. He mentioned initiatives such as the Sunday Markets, which offer a 25 percent discount on major food items and are set to be revived to reduce hunger in the state.

“The state government has made further promises to continue extending the dividends of democracy to residents. The Medical Outreach programme, free delivery for pregnant women, and reduced fares on government transportation facilities are some of the actions being taken,” Obasa noted.

The Speaker assured that the House would continue to collaborate with the executive arm to ensure residents enjoy the benefits of the current administration. He also emphasized the legislative arm’s commitment to standing as a pillar of hope for the people of Lagos.

Obasa expressed gratitude to law enforcement agents for their professionalism in maintaining law and order and thanked religious leaders, traditional and community heads, development associations, market leaders, and artisans for their support and understanding of the government’s efforts.

Earlier, the Speaker had met with residents of Agege, securing their promises not to participate in the protests, further underscoring the collective effort to maintain peace in the state.
