Roberto Mancini Dismissed as Saudi Arabia Coach After 14 Months

Roberto Mancini has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team after a challenging 14-month period marked by disappointing performances and growing tension with fans.

Mancini, who joined the team last August on a lucrative four-year contract worth approximately £21 million per year, leaves having secured only seven wins out of 18 matches.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced that Mancini’s departure was reached through a “joint agreement” to terminate his contract, following speculation fueled by a series of unsatisfactory results.

The federation expressed gratitude for Mancini’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Initially, Mancini’s appointment sparked optimism, especially after leading Italy to victory in the 2021 European Championship. However, pressure intensified this month following a goalless draw with Bahrain, during which Mancini was seen engaging with frustrated supporters, highlighting the growing discontent.

Amid these challenges, Mancini also voiced concerns about the influx of foreign players in the Saudi Pro League, arguing it limited opportunities for local talent. He noted, “Three years ago, all the Saudi players played every game. Today, 50 to 60 percent don’t play. This is our primary problem.”

With Mancini’s exit, the Saudi Football Federation is expected to quickly find a new coach to revitalize the national team and refocus on its World Cup aspirations.
