15,000 Doctors Leave Nigeria Due to Low Pay — NMA

The chairman of the Kano State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Abdurrahman Ali, has reported that approximately 15,000 doctors have left Nigeria as of 2024, citing inadequate compensation as the primary reason.

Speaking at a media conference to mark this year’s Physician’s Week, themed “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System,” Abdurrahman emphasized the need for doctors to receive fair pay and recognition for their contributions.

“Fair remuneration goes beyond just salary; it acknowledges our value and serves as a motivator for excellence while preventing burnout, particularly in healthcare. Appropriate compensation reflects the time, emotional effort, and personal commitment that healthcare professionals dedicate,” he stated.

He added that when healthcare workers are respected and adequately compensated, it enhances their dedication and strengthens their commitment to patient care, ultimately benefiting the entire health ecosystem. Abdurrahman also urged the Kano State government to honor the agreement signed with the NMA regarding the revised hazard allowance for health workers.
