Abia Lawmaker Ikwechegh Arrested for Assaulting Cab Driver
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday that it has arrested lawmaker Alex Mascot Ikwechegh for allegedly assaulting a cab driver in Abuja.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Police Command, confirmed the arrest, stating that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning.
According to the police, cab driver Stephen Abuwatseya reported the incident, which arose during a package delivery to Ikwechegh. Preliminary investigations suggest a dispute over the delivery method escalated into physical assault.
The police expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s apparent disrespect towards the Inspector General of Police, noting that after allegedly slapping Abuwatseya, he dismissed the situation with the remark, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” reflecting a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the command’s commitment to impartiality and justice. Legal action will be taken upon the investigation’s conclusion.
