Nigeria’s National Debt Hits N134.3 Trillion – NBS Report

A recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals that Nigeria’s national debt has surged to N134.3 trillion as of the second quarter of 2024, Fly Cable News reports.

According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), the country’s total public debt reached N134.297 trillion by June 2024. With the NBS estimating Nigeria’s population at 216.7 million, this results in a per capita debt of N619,501.

The breakdown of the debt shows that Nigerian states collectively owe N7.1 trillion externally and N4.2 trillion domestically. The federal government’s external debt stands at N55.8 trillion, while its domestic debt is N66.9 trillion.

The country’s debt has risen by N13 trillion from March 2024, when it was recorded at N121 trillion.
