ASUU Accuses World Bank, IMF of Undermining Nigeria’s Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of actively working to undermine Nigeria’s public university system. The union voiced its concerns amid ongoing frustrations over the delay in renegotiating the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which remains unsigned despite several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs).

At the ASUU Heroes Day 2024-2025 event in Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke also raised issues related to the government’s enforcement of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the withholding of members’ salaries for over three months. He emphasized the union’s commitment to Nigeria’s public education system despite these challenges.

During the ceremony, ASUU announced the award of N500,000 Ph.D. grants to selected members, following a thorough proposal evaluation process. Prof. Osodeke also praised the resilience of ASUU members and expressed solidarity with those facing hardships at institutions such as Kogi State University, Lagos State University, Ebonyi State University, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

The Heroes Day event recognized the sacrifices of past and present ASUU members, including the late Prof. Festus Iyayi, a former ASUU president, who significantly contributed to the union’s efforts to improve the country’s education system.
