The Osun State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), led by Kazeem Oyewale, has expressed support for the police following the arrest of Wakeel Nurudeen Iyanda Alowonle. Alowonle, Chairman of the Osun State Transport Management System, was apprehended and shot in the stomach by the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Osun Police Command late on Monday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Osogbo, Oyewale clarified that NURTW members are law-abiding citizens and not criminals. He urged the police and other security agencies to find those responsible for the murders of NURTW members in November 2022.
Oyewale condemned Alowonle, calling him an impostor and a political appointee of Governor Ademola Adeleke, and distanced the union from him and his group, emphasizing their non-affiliation with NURTW. He stated that Alowonle’s alleged criminal behavior contradicts the union’s values.
“The arrest of Alowonle, along with the dangerous weapons found in his possession, confirms the concerns the union has had over the last two years, since the state government appointed him and other criminal elements to disrupt transport activities in the state,” said Oyewale.
He questioned the source of the police-issued firearm found with Alowonle, urging authorities to investigate which police officer may have supplied it. Oyewale also called on the police to bring to justice those responsible for the murders of seven NURTW members in November 2022, with Alowonle having been repeatedly linked to the killings.
“We do not condone crime in NURTW because we believe only criminals associate with criminals,” Oyewale stated.
