Court Sentences Police and Immigration Officers to Seven Years for N1.6 Million Employment Fraud

A Federal High Court in Gombe has convicted and sentenced two police officers, Yusuf AbdulKarim Bature and Musa Philip, along with an immigration officer, Nasiru Mohammed, to seven years in prison each for their involvement in a N1,640,000 employment fraud.

The three officers were arraigned on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. Bature and Philip faced two counts of fraud, while Mohammed was charged with one count. The accused had collected N970,000 from the victims for job placements, while Mohammed received N670,000, but none of the victims were provided with the promised jobs or reimbursed their money.

Bature and Philip were charged with fraudulently obtaining N970,000 from Asabe Hamed under the guise of securing a job in 2022. Mohammed was found guilty of collecting N670,000 from Abdul Rahman Abubakar and Akwalo Adamu for a false promise of securing them positions with the Nigerian Immigration Service.

Upon pleading guilty, the defendants were each sentenced to seven years in prison or a fine of N50,000. The court also ordered them to pay restitution of the full N1,640,000 to the victims and sign an undertaking to maintain good behavior.
