Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has raised concerns about the hurried passage of the tax reform bills, questioning the rush by the presidency and certain lawmakers. The bills, which passed their second reading in the Senate on Thursday, have sparked controversy since being submitted by President Bola Tinubu. Ndume, a vocal critic, argued that the bills should be withdrawn for further consultation, as advised by the National Economic Council, rather than rushed through the process.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume emphasized that while he does not oppose the bills entirely, he believes the timing is inappropriate given the current struggles faced by Nigerians. He pointed out that major legislation like the Petroleum Industry Bill took years to pass, suggesting that the tax reform bills should also be carefully considered.

Ndume’s opposition, he stated, is not based on a refusal to pay taxes, but rather on the need for better timing, as Nigerians are currently facing economic hardships. He likened the bills to a situation where something is given and then taken away, stressing that it’s important to introduce such reforms when the public is not already under pressure. He further clarified that his stance is not intended to undermine President Tinubu, but to ensure the President’s success.
