FG Launches Investigation into Air Peace, GTB, MTN Over Consumer Rights Violations

By Fly Cable News

The Nigerian government has initiated an investigation into Air Peace, Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), and MTN Nigeria over potential violations of consumer rights. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) made this announcement on Sunday through its spokesperson, Ondaje Ijagwu.

The inquiry will focus on Air Peace for allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, including significant price hikes for advance bookings on certain domestic routes. GTB will be investigated over reported network failures that prevent customers from accessing funds or using banking applications. Meanwhile, MTN faces scrutiny over ongoing complaints of undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and poor customer support.

The investigation is scheduled to begin on December 3, 4, and 5, 2024, respectively.

The FCCPC emphasized that these inquiries aim to address issues such as poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and violations of consumer rights, in line with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. The companies involved will be required to appear before the Commission on the designated dates to respond to the allegations.

This action underscores the FCCPC’s commitment to protecting consumer rights, ensuring a fair marketplace, and holding companies accountable. The Commission urged consumers to continue reporting any instances of poor service or exploitative practices.
