Edo Governor Orders LG Chairmen to Submit Financial Accounts in 48 Hours

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to all 18 local government council chairmen in the state to submit their financial statements. The directive, which was conveyed on Tuesday, requires the submission of statements of accounts covering the period from September 4, 2023, to date.
Governor Okpebholo’s mandate was delivered by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, during a courtesy visit by the council chairmen, led by the Edo State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Newman Ugiagbe, at the Government House in Benin City.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the council chairmen are to send their financial statements to the Assets Verification Committee through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). This move is part of the governor’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability.
“The Governor has directed me to assure you that we are one family and will work closely together. However, the Assets Verification Committee, which was constituted a few weeks ago, requires your cooperation to fulfill its mandate effectively,” Idahosa said.
He added, “To this end, you are required to submit your statements of accounts from September 4, 2023, to date, within the next 48 hours. This submission is crucial for the Committee to carry out its work efficiently.”
The directive underscores the governor’s emphasis on ensuring accountability in local government administration and aligning financial management with his administration’s vision for good governance.
Earlier during the visit, ALGON Chairman Newman Ugiagbe reaffirmed the loyalty and support of the local government chairmen to Governor Okpebholo’s administration.
“We are here to congratulate the Governor and Deputy on their mandate and to pledge our loyalty. Our doors are open to your instructions, policies, and programs. We are committed to bringing the benefits of your administration to the grassroots,” Ugiagbe stated.
