Lagos Assembly Denies Awarding N17bn Gate Contract

By Fly Cable News

The Lagos State House of Assembly has dismissed as baseless allegations made by an anti-corruption group that it awarded a N17 billion contract for the construction of its gate. In a statement issued on Thursday, Mr. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, clarified that the project in question was completed over three years ago and that no recent gate construction had taken place.

The Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition had recently written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), requesting an investigation into the alleged contract. Ogundipe labeled the petition as frivolous and politically motivated, designed to tarnish the reputation of the Assembly. He emphasized that although the Assembly has its own procurement unit, it follows the state government’s official procurement process from start to finish.

Ogundipe questioned the credibility of the allegations, particularly the claim that N17 billion was allocated for a single gate, stating it was preposterous and unreasonable. He added that the allegations were based on unverified rumors and had already been addressed by the court. The chairman reiterated that the Assembly remains committed to transparency and the continued progress of the state.
