NERC Transfers Electricity Oversight to Lagos State
By Fly Cable News
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially handed over the regulatory oversight of electricity to the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), just two weeks after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law.
With this transfer, LASERC now holds the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within Lagos, marking a major development under the provisions of the amended Electricity Act of 2023.
NERC’s statement confirmed that Lagos State has met the legal requirements set out by the Electricity Act, formally requested the transfer, and notified NERC. The move supports Nigeria’s constitutional reforms, which grant states the power to establish and regulate their own intrastate electricity markets.
