Ekiti Establishes Storage Facilities to Prevent Food Scarcity

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, announced that the state government is setting up storage facilities across various regions to prevent food scarcity, similar to what was experienced last year.

The facilities are aimed at purchasing farm produce from local farmers during harvest season and storing them for release during times of food shortages.

While inspecting one of the storage facilities in Ado Ekiti, the governor emphasized that the initiative’s goal is to address food shortages, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure food availability year-round. This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to prioritize food security as part of the country’s effort to combat hunger.

Governor Oyebanji highlighted that in 2024, over 6,000 hectares of farmland were cultivated in the state, and storage facilities had become a major challenge, prompting the government to take action. The new facilities will help regulate food prices during periods of scarcity.

He expressed satisfaction that many of the crops were sourced from young farmers participating in the “Bring Back Youth in Agriculture” program and reassured that his administration is committed to achieving food security and alleviating hunger.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, emphasized that the goal of the initiative is not only to address hunger but also to create opportunities for youth in agriculture, ensuring a steady food supply throughout the year.
