Delta Catholic Priest Suspended Over Secret Marriage in the US

The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following allegations of his marriage to Ms. Dora Chichah in the United States.
In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension,” dated January 16, 2025, and signed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the Diocese confirmed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage on December 29, 2024, at Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas.
The action, captured in a widely circulated social media video, prompted the church to impose a Latae Sententiae suspension under Canon Law 1394 S1. Bishop Ewherido officially decreed his suspension, prohibiting him from exercising sacred ministry or presenting himself as a Catholic priest.
The Diocese revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had previously requested to be released from his priestly obligations in November 2024 but proceeded with the marriage without completing the formal procedure.
The statement also noted that the suspended priest has the right to appeal for the revocation or amendment of the decree but must demonstrate a commitment to reform.
“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation,” the statement concluded.
