Nasarawa Tertiary Institutions Union Urges Minimum Wage Implementation

By Fly Cable News

The Joint Union of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI) has urged the state government to implement the payment of promotion arrears, a yearly increment of ₦30,000, and the agreed ₦70,500 minimum wage for workers in the state’s tertiary institutions without delay.

In a letter addressed to Governor Abdullahi Sule and dated January 15, 2025, the union demanded that these issues be addressed alongside the January 2025 salaries, warning of possible industrial action if ignored.

Signed by JUNSTI Chairman Gbande Samson Kale, the letter highlighted that previous communications on the matter, dated November 11, 20, and 29, 2024, had gone unanswered.

The unresolved issues include the non-payment of promotion arrears, the non-implementation of the ₦30,000 annual increment, and the agreed ₦70,500 minimum wage for three state tertiary institutions.

JUNSTI pointed out that the minimum wage agreement was signed with the state government and organized labor but remains unfulfilled.

“To prevent disruption, the union insists on implementing these demands alongside January salaries,” the letter read, signaling dissatisfaction among staff over what they perceive as the government’s failure to honor agreements.

The union cautioned that failure to meet these demands could lead to a shutdown of academic and administrative operations in the affected institutions.

At the time of reporting, the state government had not issued a response to the union’s demands.
