Ex-Lagos lawmaker urges House to suspend Obasa, calls EFCC, ICPC to investigate him.

Former Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Olumuyiwa Jimoh, has called for the suspension of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently removed speaker, over claims of impersonation.

Obasa was removed as speaker on January 13 while away in the United States following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, while the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was elected as the new speaker.

Upon his return to the State, Obasa addressed a crowd of his supporters in Ikeja GRA, alleging that the lawmakers did not follow constitutional processes in removing him.

However, the assembly reaffirmed his removal, saying Meranda is the one and only speaker, and warned Obasa against any attempts to destabilise the legislative house.

During an interview on Monday on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Jimoh described Obasa’s insistence on being the speaker as an act of impersonation.

“Obasa claims that he is still the speaker, which I think he knows that the implication is automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that. It is an impersonation,” Jimoh stated.

He emphasised that Obasa’s removal followed constitutional procedures and that his absence from the assembly during the impeachment process was irrelevant.

“Obasa doesn’t need to be in the House to be impeached. It is stipulated in the constitution: section 92 sub-section 2 states it clearly,” Jimoh added.

The former lawmaker claimed that Obasa orchestrated his removal as deputy majority leader by coercing members of the assembly.

“I was not happy that he (Obasa) removed me. I was not notified about the process of my removal. I didn’t contend it because he coerced and intimidated members to sign for my removal. I took it in good fate,” Jimoh revealed.

He further attributed his removal to his opposition to some of Obasa’s policies which he described as “anti-democratic and anti-due process”.

Jimoh urged anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to investigate Obasa over financial allegations.
