Macron to Present Trump with Ukraine Peace Proposals

French President Emmanuel Macron will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday to propose actions aimed at countering the “Russian threat” in Europe and securing peace in Ukraine. Macron hopes to persuade Trump to include European leaders in U.S.-Russia negotiations, as Trump has previously suggested talks with Vladimir Putin without European or Ukrainian involvement.

Ahead of his visit, Macron coordinated with European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Hungary’s Viktor Orban, to align their stance. He aims to convince Trump that Russia poses an “existential threat” to Europe and that Putin is unlikely to honor a ceasefire.

France and Britain are also discussing deploying European forces to Ukraine after a peace deal, with a proposal to station troops in non-combat zones to deter future Russian aggression. Macron and Starmer plan to seek “solid security guarantees” from Trump for these efforts, even as the U.S. reduces its direct military commitment. European leaders are also pledging increased defense spending to ease U.S. concerns over regional security costs.
