46 Killed as Sudanese Military Plane Crashes in Omdurman

At least 46 people, including military personnel and civilians, lost their lives on Tuesday when a Sudanese army plane crashed in a residential area near the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman.

The Antonov aircraft reportedly went down during takeoff from the military airport, located within greater Khartoum. According to the Khartoum Media Office, the crash also left 10 others injured.

Initially, the health ministry reported a death toll of 20, stating that the aircraft crashed into a civilian house in Omdurman’s Karrari district. Among the casualties was Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum.

The Sudanese military, which has been engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, confirmed the incident. The army reported that firefighting teams successfully contained the blaze at the crash site.

Residents in northern Omdurman recounted hearing a loud explosion, with the crash damaging multiple homes and causing power outages in nearby areas.

As of the time of this report, the cause of the crash remains unknown.
