Ex-AGF Seeks Court Approval for EFCC Negotiation in ₦1.96bn Fraud Case

By Fly Cable News

A former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Anamekwe Nwabuoku, facing a ₦1.96 billion fraud trial, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja for time to negotiate a settlement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

During Wednesday’s hearing, EFCC’s counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, stated that five witnesses were present to testify, but the defendant’s lawyer, Isidore Udenko, informed the court that his client had engaged a Senior Advocate of Nigeria to facilitate an out-of-court resolution. The prosecution did not oppose the request, leading Justice James Omotosho to adjourn the case until March 13 for a settlement report or continuation of the trial.

Nwabuoku was appointed Acting AGF in May 2022 after Ahmed Idris was suspended over an ₦80.2 billion fraud case but was later accused of financial misconduct himself. He was removed in July 2022 and charged alongside Felix Nweke, who later turned state witness. The EFCC alleges that Nwabuoku used four companies to divert ₦1.96 billion into accounts controlled by an associate.
