Media Awards to Politicians Undermine Journalism’s Integrity – Dr. Modibbo Kawu

Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP). He shared insights on journalism ethics, media integrity, and the digital space during an Iftar event with ASKOMP members at his GRA Ilorin residence on Monday

Dr. Kawu criticized media houses for giving awards to politicians, describing it as a joke that undermines journalism’s integrity. Recalling his time as Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, he stated that he never proposed such an idea, as it compromises media credibility. Instead, Daily Trust recognized professionals making a positive impact, such as a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who helped raped women.

Dr. Kawu emphasized the need for unity among journalists, urging them to foster teamwork and mutual respect. He opposed regulating social media, citing contradictions with the Nigerian Constitution, and stressed protecting freedom of expression while promoting ethical online journalism.

Dr. Kawu highlighted the importance of continuous training and capacity building for journalists, particularly in the digital space. He noted that professional development is essential for maintaining credibility and adapting to the evolving media landscape.

In his closing remarks, ASKOMP Chairman and Informant247 Founder/Publisher, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeeq, appreciated Dr. Kawu’s dedication to journalism and prayed for his continued strength.
