Ogun Govt Identifies 16 Flood-Prone LGAs, Urges Residents to Relocate

By Fly Cable News

The Ogun State government has identified 16 out of its 20 local government areas as flood-prone, urging residents in affected regions to take precautionary measures.

Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this on Thursday at the 2025 Flood Alert press conference in Abeokuta. Citing predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), he warned of expected rainfall intensity between 965mm and 1805mm.

To mitigate flooding, Oresanya highlighted ongoing efforts, including dredging rivers, creating tributaries for Ogun Rivers, and desilting drainage channels. He advised residents in areas like Ijebu-Ode, Ota, Owode, Abeokuta, Sagamu, and others to remain cautious of flash floods. Those living along floodplains in Isheri, Akute, Warewa, and several riverbanks were urged to relocate to safer locations.

The government also called on road users to avoid flooded routes and warned against illegal waste disposal in drainage channels. Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, reassured residents of the state’s commitment to reducing flood risks.
