RENEW BALL ENERGY PROJECT: ADVANCING NIGERIA’S ELECTRICITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

In a major stride toward sustainable energy and environmental protection, the Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), commissioned the Renew Ball Energy Project on June 19, 2025, at Somotex Nigeria Limited, Lagos State. The initiative focuses on addressing Nigeria’s electricity needs while supporting ozone layer protection and climate-resilient industrial practices.

The event opened with a powerful remark from Dr. Osu Otu, National Programme Officer for UNIDO, who set the tone by emphasizing the significance of the partnership between UNIDO and the Federal Government of Nigeria. He highlighted the critical role of environmentally sound technologies in achieving both sustainable development and global climate commitments. “This project is a model of industrial transformation that places the environment, human health, and economic growth at the centre of national development”.

Following this, Mr. Yunnri, the project lead, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and reaffirmed the project’s goal to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting substances like CFCs, CTC, and other harmful refrigerants in manufacturing processes.

In his goodwill message, Adeoye Babajide, representing the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Water Resources, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to sustainable practices. He noted that the commissioning of this eco-friendly production line reflects Nigeria’s effort to manage the environment responsibly and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

Representing the Honourable Minister of Environment, Engr. Idris Abdullahi, Director of the National Ozone Office, underscored the Ministry’s recent transition from ACSC to HSC-32 refrigerants. He described it as a strategic move to protect both the environment and human health, while aligning with global standards for air conditioning manufacturing. He formally presented the certificate of compliance to the new production line, commending Somotex for its innovation and leadership.

Also present at the event was Deputy Director Aroyewun Gbolahan, Head of Department: Environmental, Climate and Energy, who represented the National Orientation Agency (NOA). His presence highlighted NOA’s continued advocacy for public awareness and citizen responsibility in supporting climate-conscious industrial initiatives and promoting national environmental values.

In his closing remarks, the Managing Director of Somotex celebrated the launch as a new benchmark in eco-friendly manufacturing across Africa. He emphasized the company’s dedication to building “a future that is economically sustainable for our children” and concluded with a memorable call to action: “Let’s continue to cool the world—responsibly.”

The Renew Ball Energy Project represents a shining example of what can be achieved through strategic public-private and international cooperation. It stands as a beacon of progress in Nigeria’s commitment to climate action, clean energy, and green industry.
