Hold Governors accountable, not President, Alaafin’s grandson implores Nigerians

Prince Kolade Afeez Oladigbolu, the grandson of Alaafin Oladigbolu has called on Nigerians to direct their demands for accountability toward state governors rather than the President, emphasizing the distinct constitutional responsibilities of each tier of government.
In his remarks, Prince kolade Afeez Oladigbolu stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated significant leadership since assuming office, noting that the current administration has introduced policies and initiatives aimed at positioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and development.
He urged citizens to take advantage of these initiatives by embracing innovation, productivity, and self-reliance, rather than relying solely on government provisions. According to him, the role of the federal government is primarily to create enabling environments and opportunities for citizens to thrive not to directly provide for every individual need.
Addressing the issue of misinformation, Prince Kolade Afeez Oladigbolu cautioned against the spread of false narratives capable of undermining national progress. He stressed the importance of responsible public discourse and the need for accountability in media and civic engagement.
The Oyo prince further emphasized that a significant portion of developmental responsibilities estimated at about 80 percent lies with state governments. He argued that governors are constitutionally empowered and sufficiently resourced to drive infrastructure, economic growth, and social development within their respective states.
“Citizens must begin to hold their governors accountable for the development of their states,” he stated, adding that misplaced blame on the presidency distracts from the performance evaluation of state leadership.
Oladigbolu also highlighted concerns about governance at the subnational level, suggesting that limited accountability mechanisms have allowed some state executives to operate with minimal scrutiny.
He referenced long-standing structural issues within Nigeria’s governance framework, including the influence of state authorities over traditional institutions since reforms introduced during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He further alluded to historical concerns about financial mismanagement at the state level, referencing past public statements by late political figures such as Lamidi Adedibu, which raised questions about the use of public funds by some governors.
In addition, Oladigbolu pointed out that members of the National Assembly both senators and members of the House of Representatives also bear responsibility for grassroots development through constituency projects funded by public resources.
He questioned the level of transparency and accountability surrounding these funds and called on citizens to demand answers.
He concluded by encouraging Nigerians, particularly young people, to become more actively engaged in governance and accountability processes at the state and local levels. According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved when elected officials at all levels are held responsible for their actions.
