Reactions have continued to trail comments by Demola Oshodi, who said the United Kingdom is increasingly looking toward Nigeria and other African markets for economic opportunities beyond Europe and the United States.
Oshodi made the remarks while speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, as he commented on the ongoing state visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the UK.
According to him, Britain’s renewed interest in Nigeria is driven by its search for new markets and economic partnerships outside its traditional spheres.
“Britain needs Nigeria. Britain is seeking for other markets beyond Europe and the United States. Britain needs an economy like Nigeria,” Oshodi said.
He added that Nigeria is seen as a key destination for such expansion due to its population size, market potential, and strategic position within Africa.
Oshodi also noted that the visit by President Tinubu provides an opportunity for both countries to deepen economic cooperation, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and infrastructure development.
His comments, however, sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians agreeing that the country holds significant economic potential, while others questioned the benefits of such partnerships to ordinary citizens.
Analysts say the renewed engagement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom reflects shifting global economic dynamics, as countries increasingly look beyond traditional markets to explore emerging economies.
The discussions come amid ongoing diplomatic engagements between both nations, with expectations of new agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
