A public disagreement has emerged between prominent figures Reno Omokri and Dele Momodu following his remarks made in connection with the death of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s mother.
Dele Momodu while reacting to the APC bigwigs who have opposed El-Rufai including Gov Uba Sani, the NSA Nuhu Ribadu, Abdullahi Ganduje and others who attended the burial of El-Rufai’s mother, said that the unity happened because of the passage of the deceased, as he also gave thanks for the development.
However, in a strongly worded statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Omokri criticised Momodu over the message he described as insensitive and inappropriate.
He questioned the propriety of expressing gratitude in relation to the passing of another person’s mother, suggesting that such a reaction lacked empathy and emotional consideration.
Omokri further argued that such conduct could be deeply hurtful, especially to grieving families, and expressed disbelief that Momodu would make such a statement. He noted that he initially suspected Momodu’s account might have been compromised, which delayed his response.
The former presidential aide also condemned what he perceived as an attempt to derive political advantage from a moment of mourning, particularly around the time of burial when emotions are most intense.
He stressed the importance of compassion and cultural values, referencing the Yoruba concept of “Omoluabi” to underscore expectations of respectful behaviour.
Additionally, Omokri urged Momodu to reflect on his actions and show greater sensitivity toward grieving individuals. He concluded by calling for maturity and restraint in public commentary, especially on matters involving loss and bereavement.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from Momodu regarding the criticism.
He wrote, “Mr Momodu, did you read the above words before releasing your statement? Don’t you think it is rather callous, reckless, and most insensitive of you to give thanks for the passing of another person’s beloved mother? Would you not be wounded in spirit if someone thanked God for the death of your own beloved mother?
“No true Omoluabi can behave this way, and I honestly thought your account had been hacked, which is why I waited a day before responding to your horrifically abominable conduct.”
