INEC Is Independent, And I Can Assure Nigerians There Is No Presidential Influence – Farouk Aliu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliu, dismissed widespread concerns about the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the electoral body operates free from executive interference.
He stated that he is confident in the institutional autonomy of INEC and its ability to function within its constitutional framework without undue influence.
He maintained that the commission is fully capable of managing its internal affairs and making critical decisions independently, noting that existing legal structures are designed to safeguard its neutrality.
According to him, these frameworks ensure that political actors, including those in power, do not exert control over the commission’s operations, thereby preserving the credibility of the electoral process. He assured the public that presidency does not interfere in INEC’s activities.
He stressed that decisions regarding electoral processes, including announcements and timelines, are solely determined by the commission, without directives from the executive arm of government.
He argued that the strength of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the clear separation of powers, expressing confidence that INEC continues to uphold its role as a neutral and independent electoral authority.
In a recent interview with Arise TV News, he said, “Whether INEC is independent I think INEC is independent, and I can assure you and Nigerians there is no presidential hand in that at all Absolutely.
