The Intersection of Health, Religion and Culture:A Call for Caution By Saanu Michael
“It is undeniable that health is a concept often intertwined with religion and cultural beliefs. Some individuals prioritize religious practices over evidence-based medical care, neglecting essential health measures like regular check-ups and seeking medical attention when needed.
In my rural upbringing, I encountered individuals known as “alabere” who, despite their limited medical knowledge, were consulted by community members for their health issues. While some fortunate individuals survived, others did not. In contrast, modern medicine encompasses a range of specialized professionals, including medical administrators, laboratory technicians, radiologists, dietitians, and consultants. Unfortunately, many individuals bypass this system, opting for quick fixes from nearby pharmacies, often referred to as “chemists.”
In this region, unscrupulous practitioners prioritize financial gain over careful diagnosis and treatment, leading to the reckless prescription of drugs without proper evaluation or investigation, resulting in wasted time, money, and even loss of life.”
