Tinubu’s administration committed to democratic principles, says Ooni

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, says President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to fostering open communication and ensuring that citizens’ perspectives are heard and considered in decision-making processes.

Speaking on Thursday after a meeting with the President alongside other traditional rulers at the State House in Abuja, the Ooni said the current administration is dedicated to engaging in dialogue and bringing governance closer to the people.

“We should talk to ourselves. It’s important for us to know that today, it’s a completely different spin. The government, ably led by the President, is willing to engage and dialogue and bring governance very close to the people,” he said

The traditional ruler’s remarks come against the backdrop of heightened demands from some quarters to stage a protest against the government, citing untold hardship in the country.

Western Post Online reported that the President was in a closed-door meeting with traditional rulers in the country. The meeting had in attendance Vice President Kashim Shettima and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, among others.

Speaking on the planned protest, the Ooni, who stated that protesting is a civic right, emphasized that the rally should have a face and not be hijacked by people with ulterior motives.

He also cautioned that it is difficult to build but easy to destroy.

He said as traditional rulers they are against breaking the law and looting of innocent citizens’ properties and will continue to engage the people back home.

“People that are out there to protest, it’s their civic right, but let them put a face to it and don’t let it be hijacked by people that have ulterior motives. That is our stand. We condemn such acts fully. We traditional rulers are not engaged in people, especially the youth, coming out to start looting, to start breaking down law and order. We are parents, we are traditional rulers, we are closer to them, we are going to go back home and continue to engage them.”

“It is very difficult to build, but it is the easiest to destroy. We are all stakeholders of this country, we should be stronger as a nation together than stronger individually,” he added.

Keagborekuzi Benjamin Ikenchukwu, the Dein of Agbor, referenced the case of Libya, claiming that the country was once lovely before its protests engulfed it and resulted in widespread destruction of property and infrastructure.

“Libya was a beautiful country, what has happened to Libya, we don’t want it to happen here. Let’s go home, let’s continue to strive the best that we can and continue to work with the government to see if we can proffer some solutions. I think that would be best rather than to destroy property or injure ourselves.”
