KANSIEC Assures Free and Fair Local Govt Elections

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has assured that the forthcoming local government elections in the state will be conducted without external interference.

During a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Kano, Chairman Prof. Sani Malumfashi emphasized KANSIEC’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. He announced that elections for chairpersons and councilors across the state’s 44 local governments are scheduled for October 26.

Six political parties—NNPP, ZLP, Accord Party, NRPM, AAC, and AA—will participate in the elections, while the All Progressives Congress has opted out.

Prof. Malumfashi stated, “The commission will operate independently, free from any interference. We urge individuals not to attempt bribery; any such approach will be reported, as we have done in the past.”

He encouraged candidates to advise their supporters against violence and to work collaboratively with KANSIEC to ensure smooth electoral processes. He reiterated that vote buying and the involvement of political thugs are strictly prohibited.

The chairman also called on stakeholders, including politicians, traditional and religious leaders, community figures, civil society organizations, security agencies, and the media, to support the commission in promoting credible and peaceful elections.

“We firmly oppose bribery, vote buying, and thuggery at all stages of the elections,” he stated, urging candidates to advocate for peace among their supporters and warning against any electoral misconduct. He expressed gratitude to the media for encouraging community participation in the elections.
