LASUTH’s Echocardiography Graduates First Set of Cardiac Sonographers

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital has graduated Echocardiography trained specialists in cardiac sonography.

The school, which is the first government-owned school of its kind in Nigeria, celebrated the first graduating class in a ceremony at the MRC Auditorium on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Dorcas Shonibare, commended the LASUTH management for producing an outstanding group of graduates. She praised the graduates for their achievements as she encouraged them to uphold professional standards while striving for excellence as they embark on their careers.

In his address, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, expressed pride in the caliber of graduates produced by the school as he spoke on the necessity of establishing the institution. He said it is due to the high incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria, low numbers of cardiologists and the crucial role of echocardiography in diagnosing these conditions. There is also a shortage of skilled technicians to operate the machines which inspired the creation of the school. He recognized Dr. Ajibare Adeola, the Director of School and the dedicated faculty members who worked tirelessly to train the pioneer set of students.

Prof. Fabamwo also spoke about the employment prospects for the graduates, with several organizations already showing interest in hiring them. He encouraged the graduates to prioritize serving Nigeria, even with the opportunities available for them abroad.

Delivering the valedictory speech , Ms. Balogun Amatur-Raquib Ajibola, the overall Best Student and Best in Theory Examination, reflected on the invaluable lessons learned during her training. She emphasized the importance of confidence in one’s skills and oneself, sharing that while many doubted their abilities at times, their perseverance led them to success. “It’s okay not to know everything,” she noted, “What’s not okay is failing to try and make the effort to grow.” She thanked the hospital management and the faculty members of the school for their invaluable commitment and support through the academic journey.

In his vote of thanks, Prof. Adebowale O. Adekoya, Director of Clinical Services and Training (DCST), extended heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, management of the hospital, and faculty present. He congratulated the pioneering students of the LASUTH School of Echocardiography as he highlighted the significance of the institution among LASUTH’s many educational initiatives and praised Prof. Fabamwo’s leadership in establishing multiple schools, including the Caregiver Academy, the School of Orthopedic Cast Technology, the School of Anaesthetic Technology, and the Advanced Professional Diploma in Hospital Administration and Human Resources.

Prof. Adekoya also announced the hospital’s plan to start a Postgraduate School of Nephrology Nursing, which is set to be the largest in the country, attributing these achievements to the Lagos State Government’s strategic investment in healthcare. He acknowledged the Chief Medical Director’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and resources.
