HURIWA Criticizes APC’s Boastful Attitude Towards Elections

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed deep concern over the boastful behavior of the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such conduct threatens the survival of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.

HURIWA stated that the APC’s actions suggest that the ruling party may have compromised the integrity of both the Judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The group pointed out that APC leaders have been confidently claiming victory in upcoming elections, similar to their assertions before the recent Edo State governorship poll.

In a media statement, HURIWA called on the judiciary and INEC to uphold their constitutional roles and resist any attempts by the APC to undermine their independence. The organization emphasized that both institutions must act in accordance with the Constitution, which mandates their autonomy from the executive branch and any political party.

HURIWA warned that the APC’s manipulative tactics could lead to widespread voter apathy, potentially resulting in a one-party state or even chaos if democracy collapses. The group urged Nigerians to advocate for INEC and the judiciary to maintain their independence from the ruling party.

The statement, signed by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, highlighted comments from APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who has boasted about the party’s intentions to dominate future elections, including plans to capture the Southwest geopolitical zone and seize political control in Rivers State.

HURIWA cautioned the APC against implementing illegal measures to manipulate the electoral process, asserting that free and transparent elections are essential for sustaining democracy and promoting development.
