Libya Arrests Nigerians Following CAF Ruling

Tensions are rising in Libya after a recent ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board against the Libya Football Federation (LFF). This decision has led to calls in the media for punitive measures against Nigerian workers in the country.

The CAF imposed a $50,000 fine on the LFF and awarded Nigeria a 3-0 forfeit victory due to the Super Eagles’ extended detainment at Al Abraq Airport, which delayed their AFCON 2025 qualifying match. The ruling cited the LFF’s failure to fulfill security and logistical requirements.

In reaction, Libyan media have expressed frustration, urging the government to target undocumented Nigerian workers. A post from the blog Libya News Today 1 advocated for the arrest of these workers, suggesting a $500 fine and additional taxes for those lacking residence permits. Similarly, Libya INF.TV called for the arrest of undocumented Nigerians, proposing that fines be deducted from their wages.

Amid this escalating situation, a Nigerian worker, Omo Oba Legba, reported increasing tensions. In a Facebook video, he shared a warning from a Libyan police officer advising him to stay indoors due to ongoing arrests of Nigerians. When he inquired about Libyan passport holders, he was told that nationality, not documentation, was the focus.

The crackdown has prompted further responses, including a video from Libya INF.TV featuring a Nigerian man pleading with authorities, stating, “Football has nothing to do with us. If you want to catch them, do so when they arrive. Leave us out of this. And to the Nigerian team, I question your judgment in coming to play football here. Please, Libyan police.”
