Oyo: Tricyclists Protest Fee Hike, Withdraw Services

By Fly Cable News

Tricyclists in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, organized a peaceful protest on Thursday in response to an increase in their daily license fees. The protest led to the suspension of services, particularly affecting the key route from Takie to the Egbeda area, leaving many commuters stranded.

Spokesperson for the tricyclists, Mr. Mukaila Oyelami, explained that the daily fee, which was previously N700, has been raised to N1,000. This new charge includes two tickets: the Oyo State Daily Ticket Scheme (“ALGON ticket”) and the “Terminal Ticket.”

Oyelami mentioned that the fee hike was announced in a meeting with the Ogbomoso Park Committee, which prompted the tricyclists to request intervention from the Soun of Ogbomoso.

Park Chairman, Hammed Alao, defended the fee increase, explaining it was due to rising costs of goods and services. He noted that the increase was planned to take effect in January 2025, following discussions with the Soun of Ogbomoso. Alao also pointed out that the introduction of the ALGON ticket in February 2024 had already signaled potential fee hikes.
