Army arrests investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo

The founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, Fisayo Soyombo has been arrested by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Fly Cable News gathered.

This according to Westernpost that there is a widespread condemnation has followed the detention of Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Commenting, Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt Danjuma Jonah Danjuma in a press released on Friday, said the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division expressed concern over allegations of detaining an investigative journalist in Port Harcourt. The division has been intensifying operations against illegal oil bunkering, uncovered a notorious gang involved in pipeline vandalism and illegal oil connections, and arrested multiple suspects, including Fisayo Soyombo.

“The division urges media outlets to verify the accuracy of their reports before disseminating information. The division remains committed to combating criminal activities, particularly oil theft, to protect national resources and increase oil and gas production in the region.”

Soyombo, a renowned investigative journalist celebrated for exposing corruption and systemic failures, has been held for three consecutive days.

His detention has sparked nationwide calls for his immediate release and intensified concerns about press freedom in Nigeria.
