Lagos Govt Denies Sachet Water Ban

The Lagos State government has dismissed rumors claiming a ban on sachet water.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that the reports were false. The clarification came after a viral video showed enforcement officers destroying packs of sachet water in the city.

Wahab explained that the individuals in the video were not from any Lagos State agency, but were officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). He emphasized that they were carrying out their legal duties to remove unregistered and unsafe products to ensure public health and safety.

The Minister further stated, “I want to make it clear that Lagos State has not imposed any ban on sachet water, nor are there any plans to do so. Our focus remains on effective plastic waste management. As part of our ongoing commitment, we are implementing mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for producers of PET, sachets, and carrier bags of at least 40 microns.”

Wahab reiterated that the enforcement by NAFDAC was aimed at ensuring compliance with health standards, and that sachet water itself was not being banned in Lagos.
