FMAFS Launches National Urban Agricultural Programme to Strengthen Food Security

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) has unveiled the National Urban Agricultural Programme (NUAP) as part of efforts to enhance food security and self-sufficiency in Nigeria. Slated for launch in 2025, the program aims to empower households to increase food production, with funding already included in the 2025 budget proposals.

The announcement was made by the Hon. Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, at the finale of the “Every Home A Garden” competition on December 4, 2024, at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja. The event was organized by the Office of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Initiative: Agricultural and Food Security Programme.

Sen. Abdullahi emphasized that the NUAP will build upon the success of previous initiatives such as “Every Home A Garden” and the “Young Farmers Club,” which have encouraged Nigerians to engage in household agriculture. “The NUAP will institutionalize the progress of these programs for the benefit of all,” the Minister stated.

He also praised Sen. Oluremi Tinubu for her leadership in promoting agricultural initiatives, particularly in encouraging women to take up home gardening, leading to improved health, reduced food insecurity, and stronger community ties.

Sen. Abdullahi highlighted the success of the “Every Home A Garden” competition, which has fostered creativity, sustainability, and self-sufficiency in households. He commended the First Lady for her dedication in making the program a success and inspiring Nigerians to adopt sustainable farming practices.

The ceremony concluded with a tribute to Mrs. Veronica Kidafa Mbaya, the winner of the first “Every Home A Garden” competition, who received a prize of N25 million. The initiative, launched in October 2023, continues to inspire individuals to contribute to Nigeria’s agricultural sustainability and food security.
