Crypto-Trader Convicted of Murdering Mother for £500,000 Life Insurance Payout

A crypto trader has been found guilty of murdering his mother to collect over $1 million in life insurance payouts, a court has revealed. Andre Zachary Rebelo, 28, was convicted of killing his 58-year-old mother, Colleen Rebelo, to claim her life insurance and maintain the facade of a “perfect life.”

Colleen was discovered dead in her bathroom on May 25, 2020, by her youngest son. Initial investigations did not suggest foul play, and an autopsy was unable to determine the cause of death. However, it was later revealed that Rebelo had taken out three life insurance policies totaling $1.2 million AUD (£500,000) on his mother just a week before her death, naming himself as the sole beneficiary.

At the time of the incident, Rebelo and his partner, Instagram influencer Grace Piscopo, were presenting a lavish lifestyle on social media, despite secretly struggling with debts over $120,000 AUD. Shortly after his mother’s death, Rebelo aggressively pursued insurance payouts, submitting fraudulent health and death records, forged medical documents, and even used AI-generated technology to impersonate his mother’s psychologist in a voicemail to the insurer.

His actions were eventually flagged by an insurance company employee, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of Colleen Rebelo’s death. In 2022, police arrested Andre Rebelo, and he has now been found guilty of his mother’s murder.
