NECA: No State Has Excuse for Not Paying N70k Minimum Wage

Adewale Oyerinde, Director General of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), has stated that all 36 states in Nigeria have no justification for failing to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage.

Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on January 7, 2025, Oyerinde emphasized that state governments have received significant financial support from the Federal Government, including increased allocations, to facilitate compliance with the wage law signed by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024.

“The N70,000 minimum wage has come to stay, and all stakeholders—federal, state, and local governments—must align with the law unless explicitly exempted,” Oyerinde asserted.

He dismissed claims of insufficient funds, highlighting that with improved allocations and fiscal discipline, no state should struggle to pay the new wage.

Oyerinde also urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to adopt new strategies to ensure state compliance with the law, should governors fail to meet their obligations.
