Lagos Seals 619 Facilities Over Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) sealed 619 facilities, including mosques, churches, hotels, and other establishments, in 2024 for various environmental infractions.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, disclosed this during a media briefing in Ikeja, Lagos. He noted that noise pollution was the leading cause of the closures, accounting for 528 cases, as the agency intensified its enforcement of environmental laws.

“These operations targeted households, hotels, and worship centers under the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017,” Ajayi stated.

Reflecting on the agency’s achievements in 2024, he revealed plans to enhance advocacy for environmental awareness and stricter enforcement of existing laws in 2025.

Key focus areas for the coming year include:

Noise Pollution: Intensifying actions against violators.
Anti-Smoking Regulations: Designating smoking and non-smoking zones.
Waste Management: Promoting proper waste disposal through authorized bodies.
Ajayi also highlighted efforts to improve public complaint handling through an expanded complaints center and digital channels.

Additionally, LASEPA aims to increase academic publications and public awareness campaigns to foster a culture of environmental responsibility in Lagos.
