Children of 86-Year-Old Blind Monarch Urge Gov Mbah to Intervene in Father’s Detention

By Fly Cable News

The children of Igwe Ekwueme Odenigbo, the traditional ruler of Akpakume in Enugu State, have called on Governor Peter Mbah to secure the release of their 86-year-old blind father and brother, Solomon, who have been in detention since January 9, 2025.

The family claims their father, a retired pastor and community leader, was wrongfully detained alongside his son following a petition by a community member, Livinus Okolo, who accused the monarch of illegal mining and inciting violence. The situation escalated after youths allegedly retaliated by destroying and burning properties, including Okolo’s house.

Okolo, however, denied the allegations, accusing the monarch of instigating the violence and unauthorized mining activities in the community. He claims over 14 houses were destroyed in the crisis, resulting in losses exceeding N30 billion.

The family pleaded with the governor and other leaders to intervene, emphasizing the monarch’s frailty and innocence. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters confirmed the monarch’s suspension and ongoing investigations into the crisis.
