Lagos reintroduces monthly sanitation exercise, without movement restrictions.

In a major move to bolster public health and combat the state’s perennial flooding issues, the Lagos State Government has officially announced the return of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the program will formally resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Going forward, the exercise will take place on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

He noted: the previous regime suspended in 2016, this revived initiative will not impose movement restrictions.

According to him, the residents are free to move about during the two-hour window. The government stated it is shifting toward a model of “voluntary participation and civic responsibility” rather than the traditional lockdown approach while residents can travel, officials warned that the two-hour period is not a free pass for neglect.

Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Hamzat launched an initiative in Mushin, urging households to sweep surroundings and clear gutters monthly, disposing of waste at approved points, to reduce refuse and prepare for 2026 heavy rainfall.
