FG Receives Tractors from Belarus, Aims to Lower Food Prices

The Federal Government has begun receiving the 2,000 tractors it ordered from Belarus, according to Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.

Kyari stated that the government is focused on reducing food prices by introducing new measures to improve farming efficiency. He noted that food prices have already started to decrease due to favorable rainfall, a successful harvest, and effective government policies.

“The 2024 farming season was highly successful, with farmers across the country reporting significant yields,” Kyari said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

He emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining this progress by supporting wheat farming in regions like Taraba State and providing farmers with modern agricultural tools.

The minister confirmed that the tractors, along with other equipment, are arriving in the country in stages. Additionally, cutting-edge technologies, such as drones, will be introduced in the upcoming farming season to enhance food production.

Kyari added that efforts to expand tomato farming in the South-East and South-West are underway, with harvests expected by May. For the dry season, the government aims to cultivate at least 400,000 more hectares of farmland and improve fertilizer distribution to boost output.

The minister assured that the government remains committed to supporting farmers with the necessary resources to increase food production and reduce the cost of living.

Kyari also revealed that Nigeria’s agricultural sector continues to grow stronger, with greater confidence from development partners. He concluded by stating that the government will continue building on this momentum to further strengthen food security in the country.
