Court Restricts VIO Powers on Vehicle Confiscation and Fines, Lagos Clarifies Applicability
The Lagos State Government has clarified that a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which restricts the powers of the Directorate of Vehicle Inspection Services (VIO) to stop, impound, or fine vehicles, does not affect Lagos State. The ruling is limited to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained on Tuesday that the judgment by Hon. Justice Evelyn Maha, which addresses the lack of legal authority for VIO in Abuja, does not apply in Lagos. In Lagos, the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL) of 2018 grants the VIO legal authority to conduct inspections, issue fines, and enforce traffic laws.
The statement emphasized that the court’s jurisdiction is restricted to Abuja, and the VIO in Lagos continues to operate under the TSRL. Lagos motorists are reminded that VIO’s role remains in effect and are encouraged to comply with traffic regulations as outlined in the law.
